Content debt is one of those problems nobody wants to own. It builds up silently. Missing component datasources, stale SEO metadata, pages published in one locale with no translation, campaign content still ranking six months after the campaign ended. None of it is catastrophic on its own. Together, it erodes content quality, search visibility, and the credibility of your CMS as a platform.
The standard response has always been a manual audit. A cross-functional team, a spreadsheet with custom rules, a few weeks of effort, and results that are already partially stale by the time remediation starts. Then repeat.
At SUGCON Europe 2026, Ram and I showed a different model: an autonomous audit engine built entirely without custom backend code, running continuously against a SitecoreAI instance, and making AI-assisted decisions on what to fix and what to escalate.
Here's the architecture, the reasoning behind it, and what we actually learned building it.
The Problem Is Not Tooling. It's Scale.
Before getting into the stack, it's worth being honest about why the manual approach breaks down. It's not a process problem or a skills problem. It's a scale problem.
A large enterprise site can have thousands of pages across multiple locales, several content types, and a team of editors that turnover every couple of years. The rules for what constitutes a quality page are consistent in theory. In practice, humans apply them differently across different days and different contexts. Fatigue matters. Priority conflicts matter. And no team has enough bandwidth to run continuous quality assurance across a digital estate of that size.
The audit is always a snapshot. By the time you finish it, it's wrong.
AI changes that equation. Not because it's smarter than a content strategist, but because it doesn't get tired, doesn't deprioritize the boring pages, and can run on a schedule.
The Architecture: Four Layers, Zero Backend Code
The system we built sits on top of four layers:

- n8n handles orchestration. Cron triggers crawl the Sitecore content tree, route pages to the appropriate analysis workflow, chain detection into scoring into remediation, and push Slack notifications when human decisions are needed. The entire logic lives on a visual canvas. No custom server, no queue infrastructure to maintain.
- Sitecore Agent API is the REST surface that makes everything possible. OAuth 2.0 with short-lived JWTs, job-based operations with full rollback support, and business-level actions that abstract away the internal CMS complexity. A single call to create a page, set fields, and publish, instead of five separate GraphQL operations requiring deep Sitecore knowledge. Critically, the Agent API is the same surface the Marketer MCP Server uses internally. That matters architecturally: you're not working around the platform, you're using the same integration layer Sitecore built for its own AI tooling.
- Marketer MCP Server is where natural language maps to operations. MCP (Model Context Protocol), Anthropic's open standard for connecting AI models to external systems, gives Claude a standardized way to talk to Sitecore. The MCP server exposes tools (create page, update metadata, publish, localize), resources (site tree, field schemas, content versions), and prompt templates (audit checklist, SEO review). The AI doesn't need to understand Sitecore's internal model. It just calls the tool.
- Claude runs the actual intelligence. Specialized agent prompts handle detection, generation, and remediation. A content health agent evaluates quality and returns a structured score. An SEO agent identifies missing or weak metadata and proposes replacements. A translation agent generates localized content and formats it for the Agent API. Each agent is scoped tightly. One job, one output schema.
The thing that holds it all together is that none of this required us to write a single line of backend code. n8n's AI agent nodes handle the Claude API calls. The HTTP node handles the Agent API. The MCP connector handles the Sitecore protocol. What would traditionally be a three-month engineering effort is a workflow import and a credential configuration.
Why n8n Instead of Sitecore Agentic Flows?
This is the question we knew we'd get.
Sitecore Agentic Flows is the native automation surface inside SitecoreAI. It's prompt-driven, no-code, and integrates natively with the platform. For marketers working inside Sitecore's own interface, it's the right tool.
We chose n8n for a specific reason: to prove the Agent API is a genuinely open integration surface.
A lot of platform "openness" claims stop at the REST documentation. We wanted to demonstrate that an external orchestration tool, with no Sitecore-specific integration, just HTTP and OAuth2, could run the same operations as a native Sitecore workflow. It can. The Agent API doesn't care whether the caller is Agentic Flows, n8n, a custom application, or anything else. The contract is the same.
That has real architectural implications. It means you can integrate content operations into your existing automation stack. Trigger audits from a CI/CD pipeline. Sync content state with a CRM event. Pull analytics signals and route remediation automatically. These are things that belong in your infrastructure layer, not inside the CMS.
Agentic Flows and n8n aren't competing. They serve different integration contexts. Both use the same API.

The Audit Engine: What It Actually Does
The workflow runs in four stages.
- Detection is continuous. n8n schedules crawls across the content tree on a configurable interval. Each page gets analyzed against a set of content quality rules: missing component datasources, absent SEO fields, pages with no language variants, freshness thresholds for time-sensitive content. Issues are logged with type, severity, and an AI confidence score.
- Remediation handles what can be safely automated. SEO metadata generation is the obvious case (title tags, meta descriptions, and OG fields) generated from the rendered page content and pushed back via the Agent API. Missing alt text, empty content fields, cross-locale content propagation. All staged before applying. Nothing touches production until it's been written to a job and passed validation.
- Confidence routing is where the system decides what a human needs to see. Below a configurable confidence threshold, the workflow triggers an approval gate. The reviewer gets the issue context, the proposed fix, and the score. Approve or reject. Every decision is logged. The audit trail is the Agent API job history, immutable, timestamped, revertible.
- Rollback is first-class. Any automated change can be reverted via the Agent API. This matters more than it sounds. Giving AI write access to production content requires a credible undo mechanism. Without it, the approval threshold becomes too conservative to be useful.
The Demo: Four Scenarios
We ran four live scenarios at SUGCON, all connected to a real SitecoreAI instance.
Content Health Audit
Webhook fires, pages are fetched and analyzed, AI scores content quality, report built and pushed to Slack. End to end in minutes.

Chatbot Integration
Content fetched from Sitecore, rendered via Agent API, fed to a conversational AI with the page scope as context. The same pipeline that powers the audit can power a content-aware assistant.

SEO Auto-Remediation
Full site sweep, AI analysis, custom JS scoring layer, structured results returned per page. This is the scenario with the most direct business impact, metadata gaps are common, easy to detect, and the fix is low-risk enough to automate confidently.

Cross-Language Translation
Source content fetched, target language validated, AI translation agent generates structured output, and the localized version is applied via the Agent API. For sites with large locale footprints and limited translation resourcing, this changes the economics.

Marketplace Availability
The workflow is published to the Sitecore Marketplace. Four prerequisites: an n8n instance (cloud or self-hosted, free tier covers this), a SitecoreAI subscription with Content API access, the Marketer MCP Server configured and authorized via OAuth 2.0, and a workflow import from GitHub.
Thirty minutes from prerequisites to a first audit running.

What This Changes Architecturally
The Marketer MCP Server is the most significant piece of infrastructure in this stack. It's not a feature. It's a protocol bridge, one that means any MCP-compatible AI client can now read, write, and operate on a Sitecore content tree.
Claude Desktop. Cursor. VS Code Copilot. n8n. Any system that speaks MCP can now talk to Sitecore. That's the actual shift. For years, CMS integration meant building a custom connector, managing auth, understanding the data model. MCP collapses all of that into a standardized protocol.
The content audit use case is a proof point. The broader implication is that any agentic workflow, content generation, personalization, translation, publishing, can be assembled from composable parts using the same pattern: n8n (or Agentic Flows) for orchestration, MCP for the Sitecore bridge, Claude for the intelligence layer.
The stack is repeatable. The investment is in the workflow design, not the infrastructure.

One workflow. One content type. One site.
The content health audit is the right starting point because the detection logic is clear, the remediation scope is bounded, and the confidence routing is easy to calibrate. Once you've seen a cycle run end to end, crawl, score, fix, approve, publish, the pattern is obvious enough to extend.
Content debt is a solved problem if you're willing to let AI run the process. The tooling exists. The integration surface is open. The engineering overhead is close to zero.
The only remaining barrier is trusting the system enough to let it run.
